My Story
I remember the day I came home from the hospital with my first born baby girl. I planned on breastfeeding but I had no idea what I was doing. I had a long labor and my daughter simply wasn't interested in nursing right away; in fact all she was interested in was sleeping. It was impossible to process all the information given to me because I couldn't put it to the test. I knew what a 'good latch' looked like but how could I breastfeed if my baby kept her eyes closed and her mouth shut in a blissful sleep? My milk hadn't come in yet and I was so worried I wouldn't have enough to feed her. What if my milk never came in? How would I know my baby was getting any milk since I couldn't see it? What does my baby want when she cries? What does a normal dirty diaper look like? I couldn't understand how as mothers we are expected to just know what to do.
Motherhood is one of the most challenging jobs and yet there is no formal education required. No manual came with my baby! I gave birth, and within a few days I was on my way home to care for and be responsible for this new little person. Fortunately, I had wonderful non-judgmental support from my family and friends but this isn't always the case. As a Postpartum Doula I can help ease your fears by providing hands on non-intrusive support and education. I develop a specific care plan that best suits your family's needs to allow for a smoother postpartum transition. A doula is a mentor that can be at your side guiding you calmly every step of the way.
